Vietnamese New Year
Tet often or New Year often starts on January 1.
It is the most important holiday in Vietnam. Tet also brings happiness to everybody after
they work hard in the year. Tet festival began thousands of years ago. They celebrated
this holiday up to joyous feasts to thank the gods that spring has arrived again and they
hope the gods will bring the cheerful time to their family next year.
Banh Chung (Rice Cake)is a special food for Tet.
According to the legend, the square shape and green color of banh Chung represent the
earth. It is made of the sticky rice layer on the outside and meat and green bean in
the center. Sticky rice and green bean represent plant, and meat represent animal on the
earth. Banana leaf wrapped around gives the cake a green color after cooked.
Fire Cracker:People light Fire Crackers during Tet which gets rid of the bad luck
and brings the good luck.
Red Envelope:Children are really happy during Tet. They get red envelopes from their grandparents, parents, uncles, aunts and relatives. Red envelopes also mean you will get enough money for next year.
